SBW Retreats -The Story Behind the Vision
By Sara Willard
I didn’t plan to start a business. I was just trying to heal.
SBW Retreats was born in a quiet cabin in the woods, where I finally found peace after again after the most heartbreaking season of my life. I was sitting with my dog, watching the sunlight pour through the big windows, and thinking of my grandparents and how I wished they could feel this calm too.
But I knew they couldn’t. At 87, with health challenges and mobility needs, most cabins weren’t built for them. That’s when it hit me: so many peaceful places aren’t designed for everyone. So I made a promise: to create a healing space that was.
Before that, I lost my husband, R.Q., very suddenly. We had just gotten married. His passing changed everything. In the weeks and months after, I lost more than just him — I felt like I was losing my whole life. But I chose not to let grief close my heart. I moved in with my grandparents, began healing from the inside out, and made a vow: if I ever found peace again, I’d dedicate my life to helping others find it too.
SBW Retreats isn’t just a business. It’s my promise.
A peaceful, accessible, nature-filled space where everyone — no matter their age, ability, story, or grief — is welcome. Whether you're tired, starting over, or just need a place to breath, this is a place to feel safe, loved, and whole again.
What We Believe
I am an explorer at heart, a lifelong student of nature, spirit, and the sacred wisdom within. My identity is rooted in curiosity, connection, and compassion — for all creatures, plants, and people. From a young age, I’ve carried the soul of a teacher and the imagination of a visionary, often dreaming up worlds and ideas that others couldn’t yet see.
SBW Retreats is one of those visions come to life.
We are building sensory-inclusive healing cabins, starting in Michigan, with a mission to expand across the U.S. Each location will welcome seniors, neurodivergent guests, caregivers, and anyone in need of rest and reconnection.
This is more than lodging. It’s a return to your soul.
If you’ve ever longed for a place to breath, you’ve just found it.
Welcome to SBW Retreats.
